07 Dec Ipertrail – BV 2 – Vrhpolje
S1 Ipertrail 173 km
Mount Nanos, in Slovenian. Monte Re, in Italian, Monte Ocra, in Roman times. It is one of the most significant points of the Karst. This is because it dominates the crossroads between the arteries that connect Ljubiana, in Roman times called Emona with Tergeste and Aquileia. A plateau of great beauty and that over the centuries has become a battlefield of conflicts and a stronghold of defense. Its strategic position reassures it as a point from which you have one of the most beautiful views of the valley, but also a very important control point for commerce and communications throughout Slovenia. Starting from Vrhpolje, go up through the ruins of the old Vipava castle which dates back to the Habsburg era, and was called “Wiluinus de Wippach”, by the Von Wippach family, who gave the name to the town of Vipava. The climb is soft but continues to the top of the Nanos, with incredible views. The fatigue of the climb becomes a call to return to these paths and follow it downhill on the occasion of the UTVV Ultra Trail Vipava Valley, held in May. If in January the Carso predominates due to its angular beauty and its open views, in May here you are absorbed in the characteristic green of Slovenia and the scents of spring. Two aid points are provided with hot tea along the way. Utilize them! A fast but sometimes technical descent will separate you from Razdrto’s Life Base.
