S1 Trieste Ultra 61 km

New 2027! New route!
The S1 Trieste Ultra is an experience before a race: headlamp, silence, cold and that concentration typical of the night, with the continuous transition between urban environment and nature. It is suitable for those who already have some experience and want something really different, more mental than ’fast“, where lucidity, management and character count. If you are looking for a race that stays in your head for weeks, this is the one with the most cinematic feel.

MAXIMUM TIMES: GENEROUS OR TIGHT?
The Karst is difficult to runstony ground, frequent changes of direction, small gradients and practically never a truly flat section. For those who want to run all the time, this translates into constant effort: pace, trajectory and support change frequently.
For walkers, on the other hand, the relatively small altitude difference helps to maintain a good progression. I The maximum times provided for all distances are extensive and allow a fast hiking pace.
The There is never boredom, neither for the fast nor for the slow: although there are no major differences in altitude, the routes keep your head busy - between technical terrain and ever-changing panoramas, if you have any doubts or want more info contact us!

Can't find the GPS track?
Use our interactive map (and, when available, those of ITRA): they offer a accurate representation to the centimetre of the route, not downloadable but more than enough to draw your reconnaissance laps.
We often publish loops and sections so that you can test the route yourself before the event.
To avoid inconsistencies and ensure that everyone uses the latest version, the official GPX track is only released once, in the week before the race. In the past, many people would download a track many months in advance and then no longer follow the updates: with any works, detours or temporarily impracticable passages, they risked using a file that was not aligned with the balisage. That is why today we only distribute the GPX close to the event.
In the meantime, we recommend:
- view previous years' tracks online, useful for training and recces;
- consult the interactive map to plan reconnaissance;
- check our Facebook page and articles on the website for updates and reconnaissance tours;

The route
The start is in the heart of Trieste in the early evening, while the city is still lit up: Piazza Unità d’Italia, the Habsburg palaces, the lights on the Canal Grande. Then comes the climb onto the Karst, but real darkness never arrives: this is a race lit from end to end — by the city lying below like a carpet of lights and by the moon reflected on the Gulf.
In between there is everything: the Val Rosandra with the white walls where Emilio Comici trained, the Opicina Obelisk, the descent to the sea at Barcola, the climb back up to Contovello through the vineyards. And the finale along the Costa dei Barbari, with the sound of the sea below and the reflections on the water showing the way to PortoPiccolo.
This is not a fast race: it is a night-time experience you remember for weeks.
Who is this race for
The S1 Trieste Ultra is an experience before it is a competition: an evening start from Trieste, an entirely nocturnal route between the city and the Karst, arriving at dawn at PortoPiccolo. More mental than “fast”, with a cinematic feel that you'll remember for weeks. Suitable for those who already have trail running experience and are looking for something truly different: clarity, managing the cold and darkness, and character are what count. PortoPiccolo and Sistiana Bay, logistical heart of the Corsa della Bora.
The Trieste Ultra corresponds to the first half of the S1 Bora Ultra. Those running the Bora Ultra (116 km) can decide mid-race, at PortoPiccolo (km 61.2), to stop there and be ranked in the S1 Trieste Ultra: the two races share the same course up to that point.
Medical certificate. Mandatory for competitive activities (athletics, cross-country skiing, triathlon, cycling, or swimming). Exemptions apply to competitors who are not Italian citizens and are not part of an Italian sports club recognised by CONI.
The right pace. At a sustained walking pace (approx. 5 km/h), the 61.2 km can be covered in about 12 hours and 14 minutes, within the maximum time limit of 13 hours and 30 minutes. Fast hiking is compatible with completion, but the intermediate time barriers are binding and leave no room for error: you need to maintain your pace without prolonged stops at refreshment points.
Dogs. Not allowed: the S1 Trieste Ultra is a competitive/athletic race.
Sister races — the 49-61 km band. Regarding physical commitment, the S1 Trieste Ultra belongs to the 49-61 km bracket of the group's events, alongside the Sardon Ultra (49 km) on sardon.run and the Montasio (55 km) by Alpe Adria Ultra Trail, Summer edition. We do not offer one-to-one matches, but the whole bracket works as an equally demanding alternative.
Do you want to train on the S1 Trieste Ultra trails even outside the race weekend? The guide Trail Running in Trieste collects paths in the Karst region that are accessible all year round.
