Race Enrollment

JANUARY 5, 2025

The S1 TransKarst Ultra represents an exciting challenge with its 48.1 km and 1310 meters of positive elevation gain, starting in the picturesque Barcola neighborhood. This race captures the essence of the great classic of the Corsa della Bora, while proposing a completely renewed itinerary that promises participants a unique and unforgettable experience.

The route starts with the first kilometers that wind directly from Barcola, proceeding along the splendid waterfront, where the calm waters and the flatness of the terrain allow you to savor the tranquility of the sea.

Almost immediately, the route climbs towards the Karst plateau, marking a sharp contrast with the initial tranquility. The climb becomes steep and challenging, involving participants in a real physical and mental challenge. Along this stretch, runners will face the historic fishermen’s stairs, a characteristic element of the local landscape that adds a touch of adventure and authenticity to the race experience.

Continuing, the route winds through hidden paths and terraces that offer breathtaking views of the sea. These passages, set in the Karst landscape, offer unique panoramas, with the intense blue of the sea as a backdrop to the rugged beauty of the Karst. Every step along these paths and terraces is an opportunity to admire nature in all its majesty, with the contrast between the green of the vegetation and the blue of the sea creating scenarios of rare beauty.

The route unites landscapes that vary from the sea to the Julian Alps and Prealps, presenting a landscape variety that alternates the majesty of nature with moments of profound historical reflection. Ultrarunners and hikers will have the opportunity to explore the emblematic places of the Great War, advancing through trenches, walkways, and casemates along the Isonzo front, thus testifying to the historical and landscape value of the territory.

This route is a compendium of some of the most significant paths of the Italian and Slovenian Karst, such as The Walk of Peace, the Alpe Adria Trail, the Via Alpina, and, of course, the S1 Trail. The S1 Anniversary Ultra 104 km is designed to be enjoyable both running and walking. Thanks to a smooth and technically not overly challenging route, the experience remains dynamic and stimulating, with continuous changes of scenery ranging from views of the Gulf to snow-capped mountains, crossing historic trails, natural caves, and military galleries.

A mix of white road, never monotonous or repetitive, always with views of the sea or mountains, together with single-track trails. Variations in rhythm, terrain type, and scenery make the race always diversified and interesting, never monotonous, always free of technically difficult or exposed sections.

The final stretch crosses the Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve, following the spectacular Rilke Trail, one of the most beautiful and scenic paths of the entire Upper Adriatic, as well as the most enchanting panoramic point on the Gulf of Trieste. The arrival, celebrated in a grand style for the tenth anniversary, offers a breathtaking view of the Gulf and the finish line directly from the beautiful cliffs of the Rilke Trail. Subsequently, the descent brings participants to sea level, where they will cross the finish line at water level.
