It runs along the Slovenian border up to Mount Kremenjak, 235–236 metres, and Quota 219/Špik. From there the course drops down the Slovenian side, climbs again to Sela na Krasu — where the aid station is — and comes back into Italy through the woods along the border. This is the stretch where the course changes country twice and nobody asks anybody for papers.

The border path along the ridge: below, the plain and the sea towards Monfalcone.

Until the end of 2007 there was no crossing here.

Who was here before

Graničari is what the border guards of the Yugoslav army were called. The line runners follow today is the one they patrolled: the border between Italy and Yugoslavia, drawn after the war and settled for good by the agreements of the 1950s and the 1970s. It was not a border like any other — it was one of the lines where a divided Europe met face to face, and it was watched day and night.

The Sentiero Abramo Schmid was not built for walking: it was built for patrolling. The border had to stay in view along its whole length, and that is where its nickname comes from: «sentiero del cordolo», the kerbstone path, narrow and raised like a kerb. A path that follows the ridge exactly lets you look down from above: you see who is coming up, and each guard post stays in sight of the next. You crossed with permission, or you did not cross. Anyone who crossed at night, away from the official crossings, knew what they were risking.

What is left

The boundary stones are still there, and so are the remains of the guard posts — just below the summit, a wartime cave as well — and so are the paths, which stayed on after the job they were built for had ended. Slovenia joined the European Union in 2004 and the Schengen area at the end of 2007: since then the border on this ridge has been a line on a map and a row of stones in the woods.

Sela na Krasu is a small village in the municipality of Miren-Kostanjevica. The aid station is there, at the 88.6 km mark of the S1 Bora Ultra. Before 1991 it was Yugoslavia.

Why it matters to us

The long courses of the Corsa della Bora cross the border by choice, not out of necessity: they could stay in Italy and cover the same distance. But a race that starts by the sea in Trieste and crosses to the other side without stopping says more about what has changed here in a single generation than any slogan could.

Dove il percorso esce dall’Italia Dopo Jamiano, la S1 TransKarst Ultra e la S1 Bora Ultra lasciano il CAI 075 e imboccano il CAI 079, il Sentiero Abramo Schmid.
