08 Dec Ipertrail – Cp Razdrto
S1 Ipertrail 173 km
The most rugged part is over! But the challenge is not over at all. You are about to cross one of the wildest and coldest sections of the race. On Mount Auremiano, in Slovenian Vremščica, you will arrive at just 1027 meters of altitude, but it is one of the coldest and most open points of the route. The forest that surrounds it is almost completely untouched and the land of wolves and bears. But don’t be afraid, neither one nor others have ever attacked anyone. You can easily proceed alone, but if you prefer you can stay in a group, also because at night, this forest is rather ghostly. At the top of the mountain, you will find a small stone church, on the back, there is an always-open bivouac. No, this is not the plot of a horror movie! 🙂 Excellent point for shelter or a stop before the last descent towards the Life Base. At the end of the descent, walk about 4 kilometers towards the village of Famlje, where you begin to enter the canyon that will lead to the Škocjan Caves, Škocjanske Jame. They are about 6 km away, with only 400 meters of ascent, but this section is more demanding than the entire stage. A winding path along the river will take you up and down continuously, always accompanied by the din of the waters. In this section it is essential to pay attention, following the path and not take shortcuts: the path is safe and indicates the easiest way. The depth of the canyon, where the waters of the Timavo River sink in the Karsic limestone, can make GPS reception difficult. Don’t worry: follow the path and the river. You will emerge back to the village of Betanja and from here you go through the promenade of the Škocjan Caves Park to reach the Life Base. Here you will not only find your box for the last time, but there will also be a hot meal, with pasta, goulash, and a soup. Park Škocjanske jame will host us in their museum, which tells the story of caving and exploration of karst caves. A unique location for an Ipertrail Life Base. Remember to take everything you need for the final stretch. From here on you are without BOX but with “traditional” aid stations.
