S1 Half Trail – 23 km

New 2027! New route!

The S1 Half Trail is the most balanced race for those who already run trails and are looking for a complete experience: varied, engaging, with the right mix of smoothness and fatigue. It is suitable for those who want a real but manageable challenge, without extremes, where rhythm, continuity and a bit of attention in the rougher sections count. It is the perfect distance if you want to feel the soul of the Bora and finish with the feeling of having done trail running ’properly“.

Can't find the GPS track?

Use our interactive map (and, when available, those of ITRA): they offer a accurate representation to the centimetre of the route, not downloadable but more than enough to draw your reconnaissance laps.

We often publish rings and sections precisely so that you can test the track yourself before the event.

To avoid inconsistencies and ensure that everyone uses the latest version, the official GPX track is only released once, in the week before the race. In the past, many people would download a track many months in advance and then no longer follow the updates: with any works, detours or temporarily impracticable passages, they risked using a file that was not aligned with the balisage. That is why today we only distribute the GPX close to the event.

In the meantime, we recommend:

  • display previous years' tracks online, useful for training and surveys.
  • consult the interactive map to plan reconnaissance;
  • check our Facebook page and articles on the website for updates and reconnaissance tours;

CAI trail network

This course follows the CAI trails of the Karst

The race alternates trails from the CAI FVG registry — Sector 0, Karst — with connecting sections of its own, marked by the organisation.

  • CAI 001
  • CAI 001a · Sentiero del Mitreo
  • CAI 033
  • CAI 003a
  • CAI 003 · Alta Via del Carso
  • CAI 008

The route

From the Bora Village at PortoPiccolo the Karst edge is tackled straight away: white stone, Mediterranean scrub, the sea widening with every metre gained. It is not a gentle start, but an honest one — the Half shows what it is made of right from the off.

Then the Sentiero Rilke suspended between sky and sea, the village of Duino with its castle and the White Lady, and the heart of the race: the Monte Ermada loop, among dolines, pine woods and First World War trenches healed over by the greenery. The return towards Visogliano and Sistiana is the most flowing part, all the way to the finish by the sea.

It is the most balanced distance of the Corsa della Bora: a real challenge, but a manageable one.

Who is this race for

The S1 Half Trail is the most balanced race for those who already run trails and are looking for a complete experience: varied, engaging, with the right mix of flow and effort. It's a real but manageable challenge – not extreme – where pace, continuity, and a bit of technical attention on the rougher sections count (particularly the initial descent from PortoPiccolo and the ups and downs of the Ermada loop).

Competitive or non-competitive. With a competitive medical certificate, departure is at 09:30 in competitive mode, with rankings valid for UTMB Index and ITRA. Without a certificate, departure is at 10:00 along with the S1 Family Hike & Trail, in non-competitive mode: same finisher medal, no rankings.

Even for fast hiking. At a sustained walking pace (around 5 km/h), the 23 km are covered in approximately 4 hours and 36 minutes, well within the maximum time of 6 hours and respecting the Visogliano checkpoint (2:45 PM).

Dogs. Dogs are only allowed on a lead in the non-competitive S1 Half Trail (as in the S1 Family Hike & Trail and S1 Borin). Not allowed in the competitive version.

Sister races — 17-25 km band. The S1 Half Trail belongs, in terms of physical exertion, to the 17-25 km distance category within the group's event family: Sardon Trail (17 km) and Sardon Half (22 km) on sardon.run, Saisera Crossing (18 km), Lussari (24 km), and Dogna Crossing (25 km) on Alpe Adria Ultra Trail (Winter edition). We do not offer 1:1 pairings, but rather the entire range as equivalent alternatives for those seeking a similar experience at another event within the group.

Would you like to train on the S1 Half Trail paths even outside of the race weekend? The guide Trail Running in Trieste collects paths in the Karst region that are accessible all year round.
