Can't find the GPS track?

Everything you need to plan your race is already on this page. The map carries the distance and total ascent certified by ITRA, and the checkpoint table sets out the course point by point: the distance, ascent and descent on each leg, the aid stations and, where they apply, the cut-off times. These are the official race figures, the ones the regulations and the ITRA points are based on. Between the map and the table you have what you need to work out your pacing, your splits, what to carry and where you can refill.

We hold the GPX back for two reasons, and neither is an oversight.

The first is safety. A track downloaded weeks ahead is rarely checked again, and in exceptional cases the course can change late on: a road closed, a path no longer passable, a section rerouted after bad weather. Set off with an old file on your watch and you are following a line that no longer exists — and that is how runners end up off route.

The second is access. Parts of the course cross private land, open to the race on race day under agreements made for that day alone. It isn't a route you can go out and run on any given weekend, and it isn't a file we can leave online all year.

Holding the GPX back until the last few days is how we make sure the course on your watch is the one you will actually run. It goes up here in the week before the race, in its final version, ready to load onto your watch. And on the day the course is fully marked: the markings are what you follow; the GPX is your back-up.

We do publish training loops on the sections that are open all year, so you can get to know the ground before race day.

In the meantime, we recommend:

  • looking at previous years' tracks online — useful for getting to know the terrain, but the course changes from year to year and parts of it are only open on race day;
  • consulting the interactive map to plan your recces;
  • checking our Facebook page and the articles on the site for updates and recce loops.

CAI trail network

This course follows the CAI trails of the Karst

The route alternates waymarked CAI FVG trails — Sector 0, Karst — with link sections marked by us.

  • CAI 001
  • CAI 001a · Sentiero del Mitreo
  • CAI 033
  • CAI 008

The route

The same start as the long races, from the Bora Village at PortoPiccolo — but with no hurry at all to reach the top. You climb to the Karst edge at your own pace, and then walk the Sentiero Rilke: two kilometres between white rock and the Adriatic, with a view that on clear days reaches as far as Istria.

At Duino stand the castle and the White Lady, the rock shaped like a veiled woman: a legend that is easy to tell a child. Then the woods, the lower slopes of Monte Ermada, the return through Visogliano and the descent to the sea. The same finish line, the same party and the same medal as the other races of the day.

It is the Corsa della Bora for those who want to experience it on foot, as a family.

Who is this route for

The S1 Family Hike & Trail is designed for those who want to experience La Corsa della Bora without chasing a personal best: families with children, those who enjoy walking for hours, and first-time trail runners looking for a genuine introduction to the Karst region, without technical sections or significant inclines to contend with.

Without a medical certificate. No health requirements to participate: the S1 Family Hike & Trail has no ranking and is open to anyone, including walkers.

Dogs allowed. On a lead, as in the non-competitive S1 Borin and S1 Half Trail (both start at 10:00) — not in any other distance of La Corsa della Bora.

Free for under 16s. The entry fee is not required for this age group; however, registration is still necessary to collect your bib and your medal at the finish.

Fast hiking is a proper way to do it, not second best. At a sustained walking pace (around 5 km/h), the 14.5 km can be covered in approximately 2 hours and 54 minutes, well within the maximum time of 5 hours and the Visogliano time barrier (14:45). Those walking continuously, without excessively long breaks at refreshment points, have nothing to fear from the time barriers.

Something shorter, still at La Corsa della Bora. For those looking for something even shorter at the same event, the S1 Borin (4 km) is the most accessible distance of the event, starting at the same time (10:00) and finishing at the same place.

Sister races — band ≤14 km. In terms of physical commitment, the S1 Family Hike & Trail is the longest distance and the benchmark of the ≤14 km range for the group's event family: Sardonzin (7 km) on sardon.run; Grego (8 km) and Valbruna (10 km) of Alpe Adria Ultra Trail, Winter edition; Oitzinger (12 km) of Alpe Adria Ultra Trail, Summer edition. We do not offer one-to-one matches, but the whole range works as an equally valid alternative for anyone looking for a similar experience at another of our events.

Do you want to walk the S1 Family Hike & Trail routes outside of the race weekend too? The guide Trail Running in Trieste collects paths in the Karst region that are accessible all year round.

🩺 Medical certificate: competitive and non-competitive

A medical certificate is required for certain distances for two reasons: because it is required by law, but above all to protect your health, because the routes can be demanding and require good training and physical fitness.

✅ Without medical certificate

They are non-competitive: they give you a finishing order with a time, but no ranking. The route can also be approached with a spirit recreational, without necessarily experiencing it competitively.

🚧 Only with medical certificate

They are competitive: even if the maximum times allow walking, they produce a ranking valid for ITRA and UTMB Index purposes. It is necessary to upload the medical certificate, except in the case of exemption:
  • NOT an Italian citizen and
  • NOT a member of an Italian sports club recognised by CONI
Important: Even if you are exempt from uploading the certificate, it is essential that you are aware of how physically demanding the race is. However, we suggest that you undergo regular medical check-ups.

🔁 Even without a medical certificate

You can participate in both modes. If you do not upload the medical certificate, you can still take part, but you will not enter the ranking.

🏅 Medal

For all finishers there is a medal: both competitive and non-competitive.
