When people talk about stage races, they often think of an easier or more diluted experience than an ultra one-off competition. But is this really the case? In reality, a stage race offers a different, intense and stimulating challenge, which can enrich the baggage of every runner, both for those who wish to enjoy the route at a leisurely pace and for those who seek to push their limits in a format that is unusual for many.
The first thing is that you run in daylight! A few hours of darkness, 100% panorama!
For Those Who Want to Take It Easy: The Pleasure of Time and Recovery
For many enthusiasts, the stage race represents an opportunity to tackle long distances with the possibility of recovering between stages. Imagine covering 50 km a day through breathtaking landscapes such as the Trieste and Slovenian Karst, with a maximum time allowed for walking. This format allows you to:
- Enjoying the Landscape: Traverse vineyards, explore karst caves and visit historical sites from the First World War without the nagging of the stopwatch.
- Recovering energyHave enough time to rest and regenerate between the stages, turning the race not into a tiring experience but a real journey.
- Immersing oneself in nature: Have a profound experience with the surrounding environment, crossing nature reserves and historical trails.
The main advantage is the possibility of combining the love of running with the discovery of the territory, savouring every moment of the adventure. This also ensures that runners or fast walkers can tackle a route they would not otherwise tackle.
For the Challenge Seeker: Two Consecutive Ultra with Little Recovery
If you think a stage race is less demanding, think again. This format can turn into an epic challenge for the most ambitious athletes:
- Two ultra-runs in two days: Tackling two consecutive ultra races tests endurance, speed and recovery capacity.
- GPS navigationOne of the stages requires autonomous orientation, adding a strategic dimension to the competition.
- New thought patternIt's not just about endurance, but also about managing threshold, pace and fast recovery, adapting to different situations in a short time. You don't run two ultras in two days very often!
This experience pushes runners to develop new skills and strategies, making the stage race one of the most comprehensive and stimulating challenges in the world of trail running.
