PEACE MONUMENT OF CERJE AND CAVE PEČINKA
GETTING TO KNOW THE RICH HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE ALONG THE KARST WALK OF PEACE

Saturday, 7.1.2023 at 11.00
Duration, length: 2.30 h (4.5 km loop route)
Departure: car park at the Cerje Peace Monument
Early membership is compulsory!
Come and discover the underground supply area in Pečinka Cave and the hoisted lighthouse that was used to see what was happening on the battlefield during the Isonzo front. Take a seat on the stone throne of General Boroević, the Lion of the Isonzo, who defended the western border and much of the territory of modern-day Slovenia during the Great War. The entire war heritage, preserved in its original locations, is now part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic.
The adventure through history begins at the Cerje Peace Monument with the screening of the film War in the Kras (1915-1918)and then continue with the accompaniment of a guide. The stone fortification resembles a time machine, offering glimpses of the countryʼs various crucial periods, mainly the two world wars, followed by the war for Sloveniaʼs independence. The viewing platform is a symbol that augurs a bright future.
We again descend from the top of the Peace Monument to the solid ground where, according to historical data, the largest number of Slovenian soldiers lost their lives during the Great War. The next stop, equally interesting, is the throne of Boroevićdedicated to the famous Lion of the Isonzo, as the Austro-Hungarian commander was nicknamed. Boroevićʼs turnaround plan for the Isonzo front was successful and led to the last, Twelfth Battle and an unexpected final outcome with the defeat of the Italian army.
Then you descend underground, where a spacious karstic cave is hidden - Pečinka Cave - with a difference in height of 22 metres and a length of 150 metres. Remains of prehistoric civilisations were discovered in the cave, but today it tells the story of the Great War. A speleological unit of sappers numbering 500 men was founded by the Austro-Hungarian army to make the best use of the caves and natural chasms. They explored and settled hundreds of caves. During the Great War, Pečinka Cave was used as a shelter for soldiers. Today it can only be visited accompanied by a guide. One can see the bunk beds that were used by soldiers to rest and the cabins for officers. The cave was first in the hands of the Austro-Hungarian army, then passed to the Italians and remained there until the end of October 1917 when, after 29 months, the battles on the Isonzo Front ceased. The tour ends at the Peace Monument where you can enjoy the view and surrender to the quietness of the surrounding nature.
