In the covid era, the refreshment with standard menus had given positive feedback... so much so that we thought we would keep the scheme. This year you asked us to introduce more variety and return to the old ways.
We always listen to your feedback and thank you for giving us the opportunity to improve every year.
We will therefore have themed refreshments, with the same basis but with a speciality for each refreshment: smoked salmon, minestrone, baked pasta, home-made cakes and hot roast ham and beer.
We will also publish a table with all refreshments and food in November.
Ipertrail: from Ljubljana to Trieste... in stages.
And you can also decide to run one or more stages, choosing which sections you like best.
You sleep in the hut, you eat in the hut and all aid stations are warm. A true adventure.
2-6 JANUARY 2024
STAGE RACE - Map Navigation or GPS
Ipertrail24 is a race, a long hike, a journey through history and time.
Ipertrail24 is also a timed, UTMB qualifier and ITRA-certified race that can also be experienced as a hike, i.e. walked at a minimum average speed of 4 km/h and easily navigated by GPS or with a hiking map optionally provided by the organisation.
Ipertrail will take you on the trail of the Romans, merchants and peoples who, from the ports of Trieste and Venice, chose this route to reach the countries of continental Europe.
A route with no technical sections, very suitable for both running and walking.
Departure from Ljubljana Castle, arrival at the Duino Crags, on the seashore via Duino Castle. You can decide whether to cover 40, 80, 100, 144 or 166 km in one or all five stages.
At the end of the stage, it will always be allowed and possible for friends and companions to enter.
A statistical stage ranking will be drawn up as a single race, valid for ITRA and UTMB purposes, and for those who complete all stages a stage race ranking, also valid for ITRA and UTMB purposes.
Three participation options:
1) Ipertrail24 FULL: registration for 5 stages, breakfast, race, dinner, refuge accommodation, transfers included.
2) Ipertrail24 SELF: registration only for 5 stages with access to the refreshment area of each stage. Other services on request.
3) Ipertrail STARTER: single stage registration. Other services on request.
The Wise Dragon
Ljubljana - Vhrnika
Date: Tuesday, 2 January 2024.
Start at 8.00 a.m. Ljubljana Castle, cycling through the beautiful city parks until we leave the capital. We then take a trail along the hills bordering the Ljubljana River to the medieval town of Vhrnika; the last effort before the end of the stage, the climb up to "Koča Planina nad Vrhniko", where it will be possible to stay overnight and dine before the next stage. The finisher of this stage will be able to obtain the Dragon crest: a symbol of courage and power.
The Forest Bear
Vhrnika - Javornik
Date: Wednesday, 3 January 2024. Start at 8.00 a.m. Before setting off, it is a must to make a little effort and climb up the observation tower next to the hut: from here you have a view of the entire valley, with the snow-capped mountains behind you. A breathtaking view. This stage will take you through the virgin, thousand-year-old forests of Slovenia, forests full of poetry and life, even in winter. Fear not, you will not encounter the bear: the bear rests during the day! From Vrhnika you cross forests and hills on pilgrims' and hunters' paths, occasionally passing an old village. The last effort towards Javornik Mountain, the most remote and distant point of the race from the sea, where a warm meal will greet the runners before a well-deserved rest at the 'Planinska koča na Javorniku' hut. The emblem of the bear, a symbol of strength, will reward your effort.
Mount Nanos. The King of the Valley.
Javornik - Nanos
Date: Thursday, 4 January 2024. Start at 8 a.m. It will not be a hard stage, but it is certainly the wildest and most remote. In the forests between Mount Javornik and Mount Naos, all the way to its summit. You will sleep in the beautiful new Vojkova koča na Nanosu hut. We have designed a shorter stage to give you time to gather your strength before the final sprint.
The big one is done! You will all arrive with the light and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets you can see from the top of Mount Nanos, after having earned the emblem of the Salamander, symbol of resistance. Sleeping at the tip of Mount Nanos is an experience between heaven and earth.
The Karst Fox
Nanos - Volčji Grad
Date: Friday 5 January 2024. Start at 8 a.m. After a night's rest at the highest point of the race, we set off again with no less than 1200 metres of negative altitude difference along a wonderful trail that already shows the finish line over the sea. From here, we reach the bottom of the Vipava Valley and then climb up into the vineyard-grown hills. The route winds its way with gentle ups and downs and a fast and runnable, but still uniquely beautiful route. Arrival at the refreshment point in Volčji Grad, the last night not in the hut but in the village association building. A warm Carsolina welcome and a night's rest will prepare you for the last little effort before the arrival. Here the fox medal awaits you: a symbol of adaptability and flexibility. A party will be organised for all competitors with local music and entertainment. Friends and companions will also be allowed in, and friends involved in Saturday's race will also be able to participate. Volčji Grad is, in fact, a 20-minute drive from the finish: invite your friends!

Volčji Grad - Sistiana
Date: Saturday, 6 January 2024. Start at 10 a.m. Approximately 5 km and we cross the border. Welcome to Italy, from here we proceed towards Mount Ermada and the trenches of the First World War, until we reach the mouth of the Timavo River and the cave, a temple of the Roman god Mithras. You can already see the sea and Duino Castle, just a few steps away from the beach. And it is precisely in these last few kilometres, on the beautiful cliffs of the Rilke path, that the poet Reiner Maria Rilke composed his elegies, from which the claim of our race 'to be here is wonderful' originates. With the famous medal, this year with the phrase in German.
