Icons in the Roadbook

Challenging section
This section is challenging, but not dangerous and not exposed. In the Karst, 'challenging' means that you have to pay close attention to the signposts, face numerous changes of direction and traverse uneven terrain. The climbs are short and steep, while the descents can be unstable. Check the detailed description of your race for more information. A useful tip: don't push to the maximum, enjoy the trail and conserve your energy.

Fast track
Here you can push yourself to your maximum capacity. These are the places where you should put your best foot forward and run at full speed!

View
Stop for a moment and take a picture. The goal is to enjoy the experience. If you are running with time in mind, look up and admire the landscape: the beauty around you will give you new energy!

Shops and Bars
This icon indicates that you are passing through a town centre where you will find shops and bars open. Take the opportunity to stop and buy something - the road ahead may still be long!

Bag
This icon indicates the presence of a bag. If it appears at the end of the race, it is the change bag that you can leave at the cloakroom before the start. If you see it along the route, it means that there is an intermediate bag, to be handed in and collected at the times indicated on the race page. Bags handed in outside the designated times will not be transported.

Refreshment
here you will find everything you need. For more details, see the refreshment table.

Light refreshment
This icon indicates a refreshment point where you will only find liquids, such as water or saline drinks. See the refreshment table for details of what is on offer.

Osmiza
These are typical Karst refreshment stops, often housed in private houses or local farms. As well as being able to refuel with food and drink, you will have the chance to sample typical local specialities, such as wines and homemade cured meats. It is a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy a genuine break during the race.

Rescue
When you see this icon, it means you can stop at that point to call for non-urgent help or rest on a cot. Even where the icon is not present, you can still receive assistance in case of serious emergencies. Mark the numbers to contact help:
WhatsApp (text and location only): +39 329 1330566
Voice call: +39 040 411341

Attention
This icon indicates factors to watch out for, but not necessarily dangerous. See the description of your race for further details.

GPS navigation
GPS navigation: this icon indicates a section without signposts, for which it is necessary to use a GPS navigator and the corresponding track. The organisation only provides GPS tracks, but not navigation devices.

Cave or tunnel
This icon indicates that the route passes through a cave or tunnel, offering a unique spectacle. Be careful not to bump into the ceiling, as it may be lower in places, and be careful not to slip, as the ground can be slippery. There are no claustrophobic or dangerous sections.

Sea!
Sea: races can pass on three different waterfronts.
- Barcola (105 km), paved and easy.
- All races finally reach the beach of PortoPiccolo... to be discovered!
Tip: when you pick up your bib, try the last 800 metres of the race, or be surprised directly during the race!

Trench
Don't worry, nobody is shooting at you! These are passages inside trenches dating back to the Great War. The path is narrow and it is not possible to overtake other participants, but take the opportunity to admire the historical site you are in.

Maximum time
This icon, associated with a time, indicates the maximum time out. That is, you cannot leave a control point after this time. We do this for your safety. Always check the maximum time for all sections, the minimum race speed we calculate is based on the terrain, so make your own assessments!

This year we start with PortoPiccolo. Immediately stony beach and jetty, then up towards the subway of the coast.
Watch out for Borgo San Mauro: you will travel about 700 metres along the provincial road. Maximum respect for the highway code, don't stand in the way!
From Sistiana onwards you will travel a section that follows the classic route of La Corsa della Bora, but in the opposite direction. Here, the views of the Gulf, whether illuminated by night lights or in broad daylight, are simply incredible: you feel as if you are running through a postcard. The trail is a continuous up and down, exciting and fun.
Then you enter the scenic single track: crazy views, but watch out for slippery rocks, especially in the dark. Arriving at Santa Croce, After the refreshment stop, the route becomes a motorway: fast and easy.

Passage through the Lesa/Grižnica Cave and refreshment of San Pelagio:

Caution: The entrance is slippery and the height is approximately 1.70 m. Proceed with caution to avoid falls or blows to the head.
After the cave, the path opens into a sinkhole and continues to the Great War theme park. Take advantage of the ascent to the lookout to take a panoramic photo: it is really worth it!

The pre-course becomes very fast for 11 km, along forest roads and easy trails, until the ascent to Mount Ermada. Attention, here we will find a junction between all races and the 57 km. Watch out for the signs!

After refreshments, one of the most unusual parts of the route begins: the Sissi Stairs or Fishermen's Path. This historic stairway, which leads directly to the Miramare Park, is almost 300 years old and requires attention. The first 40 steps, smooth and potentially slippery, must be tackled calmly, using the handrail. If they are wet, they will feel like running on ice, so don't underestimate them.
Once you reach sea level, you will find yourself on one of the most beautiful and evocative stretches of the race: 3.3 km run along the seafront. The illuminated city, the sound of the waves and the imposing silhouette of Miramare Castle will make this segment unforgettable. It is a moment to be lived calmly, enjoying every step and, why not, perhaps taking a photo.
From Barcola to the Napoleonic Road
This section is short but demanding: 1.4 km with 270 metres of positive altitude difference.
The paths are narrow and cross pedestrian alleys and terraces with beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste and the Victory Lighthouse. Tackle these 1.4 km calmly, without overdoing it: it is a stretch that requires attention and concentration.
Our volunteers have cleaned and cleared the path, but the trails retain their natural, wild character.
Once you reach the Strada Napoleonica, the route widens to 3 metres wide on a forest road. This is the ideal time to pick up the pace and overtake those ahead of you.
After the Obelisco refreshment point, continue to the Trebiciano saddle 2.8 km from the refreshment point. Here the 57 km turns left passing from the CAI 1 to the CAI 2 marker. Take a good look at the signs that indicate Anniversary straight and Explorer to the left! Keep your head up at the crossroads, don't run with your head down!

Crossing the provincial road:
Pay attention when you get to the provincial road. Volunteers will be there to help you, but stay focused on the traffic. After the crossing, the route runs on private land: respect these areas by staying on the marked tracks and following the markers.
Vedetta di San Lorenzo and descent to the valley floor
Once you arrive at the Vedetta di San Lorenzo, a spectacular view of the Val Rosandra opens up. It is a perfect place for a photo opportunity, both during the day and at night.
From here starts a 1.5 km descent, steep and potentially slippery because of the leaves. Proceed with caution, without exaggerating with speed: in the valley the refreshment point in Bagnoli and immediately afterwards the most demanding section of the race.
"Vertikala': The toughest climb of the course!
1 km with 350 metres of positive height difference. Unstable karstic scree that requires attention, but no exposed or dangerous sections. It is a segment that requires strength and concentration, but offers extraordinary views along the ascent.
From Vertikala to Basovizza:
After the ascent, the route runs along the ridge with breathtaking views, followed by a fast and runnable descent to the valley. A new ascent of 350 metres of altitude difference on easy terrain will take you to the Basovizza refreshment point, where you will find your gear bag. From Basovizza to Monrupino-Repen there are 16 km with 316 metres of positive altitude difference. The trail is fast, smooth and easy, ideal for running and enjoying every moment.
From Monrupino-Repen onwards:
This is where the real mental challenge of the Karst: You will not find steep climbs, but the terrain will become more technical and mentally demanding. The continuous alternation of physical and mental difficulties is what makes the Karst unique.
